According to a Gartner analyst report, worldwide device shipments (including phones, tablets, and ultraportable PCs) are expected to grow by approximately 5.9% year over year. Not surprisingly growth is occurring in the lower-end device market.
The tablet and smartphone markets are facing some challenges as these devices gain longer life cycles. There has also been a shift as many consumers go from premium tablets to basic tablets. The share of basic tablets is expected to increase faster than anticipated, as sales of the iPad Mini already represented 60 percent of overall iOS tablet sales in the first quarter of 2013.
While Android and Microsoft are outdoing Apple in the device shipments, Mac OSX and iOS have a more cohesive ecosystem and sell well across all platforms. In contrast, phone sales make up 90% of Android growth and PCs account for 85% of Microsoft sales.
